France
River Seine Bursts
On Thursday, the Seine River in Paris rose to over 18 feet and is projected to peak at 20 feet (6.2 meters) on Saturday. The rise in water disrupted the city’s transportation system and tourism sector. Officials stated, the Louvre Museum; France’s most visited museum, will remain close until Jan. 28th. This is not the first time the river overflowed its banks, the latest flood was in June 2016. In 1910 the river rose to a record 28 feet during “The Great Flood of Paris.”

South Korea
Hospital Fire
One of South Korea’s deadliest fires in almost a decade started in the emergency room of Sejong Hospital around 7:30 AM local time, spreading to the adjacent nursing home. At least 37 people were killed and 70 injured, many of whom were elderly. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. The building did not have any fire sprinklers installed – which is legal under current law. However, it will become mandatory on June 30th for nursing homes to have sprinklers.

China
Proposed “Polar Silk Route”
On Friday, China announced plans to develop trade routes in the Arctic region. The potential “Polar Silk Route” will be an expansion of the country’s “Belt and Road” initiative. China said that due to the effects of global warming, viable shipping routes through the Arctic would become increasingly important for international trade. The country also mentioned they are willing to work with the Arctic countries to develop the route. However, China’s increased presence in the region has raised fears that the country’s main objective is to grab resource-extraction opportunities resulting from climate change.
