China
Disputed Land
New satellite images have reveled that China has built military facilities about four times the size of Buckingham palace on contested islands in the South China Sea. The new constructions covers about 72 acres (29 hectares) of the Spratly and Paracel islands, islands which are also claimed by several other Asian nations. The facilities have raised concerns from neighboring countries, especially the Philippines which “brought a case to the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague which ruled in July 2016 against China”. China does not acknowledge the ruling. This map depicts the areas China claims in the South China. Click on the map to learn more.
