France: Yellow Vest Riots

France
Yellow Vest Riots
For the past three weeks, “Yellow Vest” protests in France have erupted throughout the country. The protests are against the rising diesel taxes recently implemented in an effort to hold France to it’s climate change commitments.  The protests are not only a call against the rising diesel and gasoline taxes, but also a symptom of a greater issue throughout France: rising unemployment and a decreasing social safety net that many citizens outside of big cities have found to be creating “not deep poverty, but ever-present unease”. In response to the violent protests, President Macron has suspended fuel price hikes.

Israel
Hezbollah Tunnels
Israel military forces started “Operation Northern Shield” Tuesday to “expose and thwart” tunnels built by the Hezbollah militant group across the  Lebanese-Israeli border. The act is meant to neutralize any attack tunnels before they become operational. Tensions are high between Israel and Hezbollah, and there has been no immediate response by the Lebanese militant group to the operation. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are concentrating on blocking a tunnel that begins in a Lebanese civilian home and stretches 650 ft across the Israeli border near Metula.

South Sudan
150 Women Assaulted
Three UN agencies reported that 150 women and girls had been raped over the past 12 days by armed men in uniform. The attacks were carried out in the northern city of Bentiu, South Sudan.  The country has experienced extreme levels of sexual violence against women and children since the start of the war in 2013.  In the first half of 2018 alone, 2,300 cases were reported and at least 20% of those  assaults were against children.  The UN believes that number is much higher due to the severe under-reporting of sexual violence.
