Germany
Easter Lockdown

Infections have been surging in some parts of Europe in recent weeks as countries scramble to vaccinate their populations. According to BBC News, Germany has extended its lockdown for three weeks, imposing an almost complete halt over the Easter holiday in response to a third wave of coronavirus infections. The highly contagious UK (Kent) variant of coronavirus has become dominant in Germany, plunging the country into “a new pandemic”. It is proving deadlier, more contagious, and remains contagious for much longer. The infection rate has risen above 100 per 100,000 inhabitants in Germany. A further 7,485 infections have been reported in the past 24 hours, as well as 250 deaths.

North America
Multi-Nation Railroad Merger
Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd came to terms to acquire Kansas City Southern in a cash-and-stock deal worth $25 billion that would create the first railway network to span the United States, Mexico, and Canada. It would be the largest combination ever of North American railways by transaction value. Although railroad mergers have become increasingly more difficult to complete, the two companies have expressed confidence that the deal will happen by the middle of 2022. The acquisition still needs the approval of the U.S. Surface Transportation Board (STB).This map depicts the continent of North America, with the railroads included in the merger detailed in a variety of colors. Click on the map to learn more.

A: Andes
Paso Internacional Los Libertadores, also called Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) or Los Caracoles (the Snails), is a section of the CH-60 highway connecting Santiago, Chile with Mendoza, Argentina. This portion of the road rises over 2,600 feet (800 m) and reaches an altitude of 10,500 feet (3,200 m). The Tunnel of Christ the Redeemer, located along the pass and intersecting the national borders, is often closed during the winter due to heavy snow blocking both ends.
