Merz Looks for Nuclear Expansion
German Chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz has expressed his wish to work with France and the United Kingdom to expand Europe’s nuclear deterrence. He suggested that any growth in Europe’s nuclear attack capability would be a supplement to the United States’ nuclear shield. Germany has some of Europe’s leading manufacturers of conventional weapons but has refrained from building its own nuclear arsenal due to its history as an aggressor. Leaders across Europe are looking at all forms of weapons expansion, as the administration of United States President Donald Trump has cut off all material and intelligence assistance to Ukraine. Last week, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, unveiled the ReArm Europe Plan to increase defensive spending in the European Union by €800 billion ($867 billion).

North Sea Ship Collision
An oil tanker and cargo ship collided in the North Sea off the coast of Lincolnshire this morning just before 9:50am U.K. time, causing a major fire. The Coastguard coordinated an emergency response including lifeboats and helicopters; however, 32 casualties have already been brought ashore. Local authorities reported a “massive fireball,” and images of the event depict a wide blaze and thick, gray smoke on the water. The oil tanker is American-flagged and named “Stena Immaculate,” while the cargo ship is Portuguese and named “Solong.” It is possible that the collision was due to fog and poor visibility.

Argentina Combats Illegal Fishing
Argentina’s military is intensifying its efforts to stop illegal fishing operations within its maritime territories. Argentina’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ), which extends about 200 nautical miles (370 km) off the Argentine coast, is a hotspot for unregulated fishing, including many Chinese vessels fishing for squid. Unregulated vessels often linger near the EEZ border and then turn off their automatic identification systems to fish undetected within the illegal zone. The Argentine Navy has acquired multiple planes designed for maritime surveillance, and in a recent surveillance mission, the military identified 380 fishing vessels along the border of the EEZ, many of which were from China. Argentina has strict fishing regulations within its EEZ, as the marine region faces potential environmental collapse from overfishing.

Q: What country is home to the largest oasis in the Sahara?
A: Morocco
The biggest oasis in the Sahara is the Tafilalt Oasis in Morocco. It is located in the southeastern part of the country and comprises the fortified villages of Erfoud, Arab Sebbah du Ziz, Rissani, Seffalat, Aoufous, and Jorf. The oasis stretches along the Wadi Ziz (Ziz River) for about 30 miles (50 km). There are around 90 major oases in the Sahara, the world’s largest hot desert, and they provide important sources of water in an otherwise arid environment. The Oasis of Tafilalet has been a significant settlement for centuries. It served as a vital trade hub along ancient caravan routes that connected Morocco with sub-Saharan Africa. The oasis was a crucial stop for traders and travelers, contributing to its historical and cultural richness.
