US Ship Destroys Drone
President Trump said the USS Boxer, an assault ship stationed in the Strait of Hormuz, was forced yesterday to destroy an Iranian drone that was flying dangerously close to the vessel. After the drone ignored multiple calls to withdraw, the Boxer jammed the aircraft’s signal, bringing it down, Trump said. Meanwhile, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi denied today that Iran had lost a drone in the area, saying all Iranian drones had returned safely to base. The country’s Revolutionary Guard said it had images from the drone in question that would disprove Trump’s statement because they were taken after the U.S. claimed the aircraft was destroyed. Araqchi said he suspected the U.S. warship had shot down one of its own drones by mistake.

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake hit 23 km northwest of Athens earlier today. No serious injuries or damage have been reported aside from two collapsed buildings. Several power outages were reported in central Athens and the fire department rescued more than a dozen people trapped in elevators. While the earthquake has been followed by several aftershocks, the head of the country’s anti-quake protection agency advised residents to remain calm.

Tiangong-2 Set to Leave Orbit
China’s second space lab, Tiangong-2, is scheduled to return to Earth today, landing in the Pacific Ocean between New Zealand and Chile. The lab entered Earth’s orbit in September 2016 to test technologies for a Chinese space station set to launch next year, in competition with the United States and Russia’s International Space Station. The China National Space Administration says most of the station will burn during reentry into Earth’s atmosphere, but a small amount of debris may fall safely into the Pacific Ocean. Unlike its predecessor, Tiangong-1, which lost contact with China in April last year before it burned over the South Pacific, Tiangong-2 will fall out of orbit in a controlled manner. In 2016, the spacecraft hosted two astronauts for 30 days in what has been China’s longest human spaceflight mission.
