Fuego Volcano Eruption
Fuego volcano erupted on Sunday, resulting in at least 25 deaths, and injuring hundreds more; authorities fear the death toll will rise. Thousands of people were evacuated after the first eruption; residents were warned of new eruptions and mudslides containing volcanic material. This is Guatemala’s deadliest event since 1902. The eruption created a plume of ash that rose almost 6 km, affecting about 1.7 million people in the surrounding area. Pyroclastic flow, a mix of red-hot rock and gas, gushed down the mountainside with extreme speed, reaching nearby Guatemala City and El Rodeo. This map depicts the location of Fuego volcano and nearby cities. Click on the map to learn more.

Migrant Boat Capsizes
At least 48 people were killed Saturday night while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea from Tunisia to Europe. The boat, carrying 180 migrants, capsized 16 nautical miles off the Sfax coast, near the Kerkennah Islands. Dozens of others were rescued by the Tunisian coast guard. Many African migrants hoping to escape conflict and poverty attempt this perilous journey over the Mediterranean. One of the most common routes for migrants is from Tunisia to Sicily. The U.N. believes that 660 migrants have died attempting to cross the Mediterranean this year. This map depicts the area in which boat sank. Click on the map to learn more.

Afghanistan
Suicide Bombing
Monday morning a suicide bomb went off outside Kabul Polytechnic University at a gathering of the Afghan Ulema Council, a group of religious clerics. The group of religious leaders were discussing a “fatwa,” or Islamic ruling, declaring suicide attacks “haram” – forbidden, under Islamic law. Twelve people were killed, with 20 more wounded. Kabul has been the site of many recent attacks by ISIS and the Taliban, making it one of the most dangerous places to be a civilian. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.
