Pentagon Accuses Iran of Attack
The US military released new photos today suggesting that Iran was responsible for an attack last week on two oil tankers—the Japanese-owned Kokuka Courageous and the Norwegian-owned Front Altair—near the Persian Gulf. The images appear to show members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) removing an unexploded mine from the side of one of the vessels. The pictures also show a hole on the side of the boat, which US officials say was caused by another mine. Iran, which was responsible for rescuing many of the crew members from the two tankers, has denied involvement in the attack. Yesterday, the Pentagon announced it will send 1,000 additional troops to the Middle East amid growing tensions in the region. This map, released by the Pentagon, depicts the locations of the two tankers, in green, the US ship, in blue, and an Iranian vessel, in red. Click on the map to learn more.

China
Deadly Earthquake
12 people died and at least 135 people were injured after a strong 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern China’s Sichuan province yesterday. The area later registered a series of aftershocks, the largest of which had a magnitude over 5.0. According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, the epicenter was located outside Yibin, home to over 4.4 million people. Rescue efforts are underway for people who were trapped under rubble. A hotel and hospital have sustained damages and some major roads have been closed. China’s worst earthquake in recent years occurred in 2008, which killed nearly 90,000 people in the mountainous region of Sichuan. This map depicts the epicenter of the deadly earthquake in Sichuan province yesterday. Dominican Republic
Tourist Deaths
Eight American tourists have died in the Dominican Republic in 2019 under questionable circumstances. Autopsies done on three of the deceased showed pulmonary edemas, enlarged hearts, and internal hemorrhaging. Toxicology reports, which could take up to 30 days, will provide more details on recent cases. The FBI confirmed they are working with local authorities to investigate the deaths and to ensure the safety of U.S. citizens while visiting the country. Many of the deceased were on vacation in Punta Cana or La Romana. This map depicts the location of the tourists’ deaths. Click on the map to learn more.
