India
Combating Pollution
India’s Supreme Court has temporarily banned the sale and distribution of fireworks in the capital of New Delhi in an attempt to control the worsening air pollution crisis. The ban has been placed in preparation for the Diwali festival where about 50,000 tons of firecrackers are set off every year. The order came in response to several petitions received by the court, citing the air pollution that reached hazardous levels just the year before. According to the statement from the Supreme Court, the ban would be lifted on November 1, 13 days after Diwali. This map depicts the levels of pollution in India, the worst of which is centered around the Delhi region in the north. Napa Valley Wildfires
Several massive wildfires burned in Napa and Sonoma Counties in California early Monday. Major roadways were shutdown, thousands of people were forced to evacuate and a number of homes and businesses were destroyed. According to Windsor Fire Chief Jack Piccinini, nearly every one of Sonoma County’s fire resources is being used but it’s not enough. “Everyone in Sonoma County is spread out fighting these fires, but they don’t have enough resources to handle something like this. The only thing we can do is hope the wind will come down,” he said. This map shows the location Napa County. Click on the map to expand.
