India
Deadly Second Wave
India is facing a second wave of COVID-19 infections, recording a new one-day record of 1,761 deaths and over 259,000 new infections in the last 24 hours. As reported in BBC News, Indian politicians, policy makers, and the media believed India had passed through the worst of the pandemic by the end of 2020, and over the first part of 2021, activities resumed with generally no safety protocols or social distancing. By mid-April, the country was averaging more than 100,000 cases a day and on Sunday recorded a new single-day record of more than 270,000 new cases. It is believed that at the current rate, India could reach more than 2,300 daily deaths by the first week of June.

Typhoon Surigae
Two people have died and 100,000 have been evacuated as a powerful typhoon approaches the Philippines. Typhoon Surigae was about 360 miles (580 km) east of Manila, the country’s capital and most populous city on Monday afternoon with sustained winds of 121 mph (195 km/h) and gusts up to 149 mph (240km/h). In addition to the flooding of 22 villages and power outages in four provinces, more than 3,200 people and 43 ferries and cargo ships were stranded in seaports. Meanwhile, the Philippine Coast Guard said it is searching for 20 crew members who remain missing after abandoning ship amid rough seas.

Ukraine & Russia
Growing Military Presence
Tension at the Russia-Ukraine border continues to rise, causing world leaders from the United States and European Union to warn against impending confrontation. Russia has been building up its military presence outside of Ukraine, and new photos reveal the presence of Su-30 fighter planes, armed units, motorized rifles, attack helicopters, drones and a military hospital. These recent events have sparked Ukraine and its allies to request Russian President Vladimir Putin to remove Russian troops from the border. U.S. President Joe Biden has declared a state of emergency at the Russia-Ukraine border and has called back U.S. warships that were previously sent to deescalate the scene.

Q: What crater, which stretches 110 miles (177 km) across and is the third largest impact crater on earth, was created by the asteroid widely believed to cause the extinction of dinosaurs 65 million years ago?
A: Chicxulub Crater
Located under the Gulf of Mexico and the Yucatán Peninsula, the Chicxulub Crater is named for the small village that now lies near its center. The crater was formed after an asteroid struck the area with tremendous force at the end of the Cretaceous Period, prompting earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and a significant climatic event which led to mass extinctions. The crater is buried beneath thousands of feet of limestone and was not discovered by geologists until 1978.
