India: Doctors Protest Medic’s Murder

India
Doctors Protest Medic’s Murder
Thousands of doctors in India are on strike in protest over the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor while on shift at a Kolkata hospital. Protesters are demanding justice for the victim and stronger legislation to protect healthcare workers from violence. The 31-year-old doctor in Kolkata’s state-run RG Kar Medical College was found raped and murdered on August 9. A police volunteer was subsequently arrested in connection with the crime. Doctors in India’s overcrowded government hospitals are protesting being overworked and underpaid and say not enough is done to curb violence leveled at them by people angered over the medical care offered. Women – who make up nearly 30% of India’s doctors and 80% of the nursing staff – are more vulnerable than their male colleagues. Medical associations are calling for a stringent federal law to protect healthcare workers and an overhaul of security measures at hospitals, including video surveillance and deployment of additional security staff.

Canada
Deadly Polar Bear Attack
Two polar bears attacked and killed an an employee of the Nasittuq Corporation, a logistics company, at a remote location on Brevoort Island in Canada’s Nunavut territory. The location is one of several air-defense radar stations operated by Nasittuq for the Canadian government as part of the North Warning System that protect’s North American airspace from attack. The victim’s co-workers responded to the attack and killed one of the two bears. While polar bear attacks are comparatively rare, this is the second attack in two years, following the death of a woman and her child by a bear in Wales, Alaska in January, 2023.

This map depicts the location of Brevoort Island, where a worker at a radar site for a private defense company was killed by two polar bears last Thursday. Click on the map to learn more.

Space
Mars Holds Subterranean Water

Readings from NASA’s Mars Insight Lander have provided near-conclusive evidence that a vast reservoir of liquid water lies deep beneath the surface. As described in a report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Insight took seismological readings of quakes eminating from the core of the planet from its landing in 2018 until being shut down in 2022. Using the same analysis techniques to find water or fossil fuels on Earth, researchers have found signatures for a large body of liquid water to exist in Mars’ mid-crust – enough to create an ocean on the surface. The presence of liquid water then begs the long-running question of whether life has previously existed or currently exists on Mars. The most promising means of addressing that question would be the retrieval and analysis of samples of sedimentary rocks taken by NASA’s Perseverance Rover from the surface of the planet, a project which has been put on hold by budget constraints.

This map depicts the locations where sedimentary rocks – which can only be created through processes involving liquid water – have been retrieved by NASA’s Mars Perseverance Rover. The presence of liquid water deep in the crust of Mars has been seemingly confirmed by seismological readings taken by NASA’s Insight Lander. Click on the map to learn more.

Yesterday’s Answer

Q: What is the smallest and most densely populated Central American country?

A: El Salvador
El Salvador is the smallest and most densely populated of the seven Central American countries. El Salvador is bounded by Honduras to the north and east, by the Pacific Ocean to the south, and by Guatemala to the northwest. The Pipil (descendants of the Aztecs), the predominant tribe in the region, named their territory and capital Cuscatlán, or “Land of the Jewel.” More than three-fourths of the Salvadoran population lives in the intermontane basins of the central highlands. The major Spanish colonial settlements were also situated in these central basins and include Santa Ana, Ahuachapán, San Salvador, San Vicente, and San Miguel. This concentration of population was perpetuated during the colonial period by the commercial production of indigo and sugar on private estates, owned by a few wealthy families.
