India
Election Results In
On Thursday, results for India’s general election revealed a landslide victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with Prime Minister Narendra Modi securing a second term.  After the marathon six-week election, BJP won 303 of the 543  seats in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s parliament. A party needs to win 272 seats for a majority in parliament. This election also marked a voting record for India, with nearly half of the 900 million registered voters being women. World leaders continue to congratulate Modi on his win.

Botswana
Elephant Hunting Ban Lifted
Botswana’s government is lifting a hunting ban on elephants. The ban was initially introduced in 2014 by former president and environmentalist,  Ian Khama, after the elephant population declined. Today, the ruling party Botswana Democratic party has been lobbying to overturn the ban because the elephant population has been increasing, impacting farmer’s livelihoods and the human-elephant conflict in a negative way. Conservationists argue that lifting a ban on hunting would drive elephants to be more hostile and aggressive toward humans. Botswana has the highest population of elephants in Africa with over 130,000 elephants roaming its open grass lands.

Nepal
Deadly Everest
The death toll on Mount Everest has risen to 16 for the Spring 2019 climbing season. Expedition leaders on the mountain say that the amount of climbers on Mount Everest has increased and caused a traffic jam on the slopes, forcing climbers to spend more time at low-oxygen altitudes.  Just recently, an American from Utah, Donald Cash, died on his decent from the summit after running out of oxygen. He was at an elevation of about 8,000 meters. More than 200 climbers have died on the peak since 1922.

This map depicts the base camps on the South route to the summit and where Donald Cash took his last photo. Click on the map to learn more.
