India: Peace Corridor

<!doctype html>

India
Peace Corridor
India and Pakistan are ready to inaugurate the construction of a “peace corridor” to allow for religious devotees to travel freely between the two countries. The 3.1 mile passage will connect two Sikh temples, Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, Pakistan and the Dera Baba Nanak temple in India. The Kartarpur temple is one of the holiest sights for Sikhs and many Sikhs make the pilgrimage from India. The two countries have had deeply rooted tensions for decades but many hope this new corridor will allow for some deescalation and open up the possibility of peace talks.

United States
Rate of Uninsured Children Increasing
In the last decade, the rate of children with no health insurance coverage has been on the decline. New research from Georgetown University indicates the this trend is now reversing. The number of uninsured children jumped 3.6 million in 2016 to an estimated 3.9 million in 2017. In 2017 every state saw an increase in uninsured children (the District of Columbia did not), which may indicate a national trend. Texas had the highest uninsured rate. Notably, three quarters of the children who lost coverage between 2016 and 2017 lived in states that did not expand Medicaid, and children of immigrants, as well as Hispanic and Native American children tend to have higher uninsured rates than the national average.

This map depicts significant rates of uninsured children by state compared to the national average. Click on the map to learn more from the report.

Australia
Catastrophic Fires
More than 140 fires are burning in Queensland, Australia. For the first time, the country’s fire threat level has been raised to “catastrophic.” Nearly 10,0000 Queensland residents have been prompted to evacuate, as strong winds, dry vegetation and a record-breaking heatwave exacerbate fire conditions. Fires in Queensland at this time of the year are unusual as it is the wet season. The country is also experiencing an extreme drought, forcing farmers to slaughter cattle as they have run out of water to drink.
