India: Protests Continue

India
Protests Continue
Protests against India’s controversial India’s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) which critics say would give preferential treatment in becoming a citizen based on religion. The CAA would offer amnesty to non-Muslim illegal immigrants from three neighboring Muslim-majority countries, amending India’s previous law that prohibits illegal immigrants from gaining citizenship.  In Delhi, a student was shot by police while protesting outside of Jamia Millia Islamia University, where students have been at the forefront against the new law.  In India’s northern Uttar Pradesh region, 30 people have died during protests and police have subsequently been accused of brutality.

Life Expectancy Increases
Life expectancy rose in 2018 in the United States for the first time in four years according to a report released by the National Center for Health Statistics today. In 2018, the average life expectancy for American was 78.7 years, 0.1 years higher than in 2017. The increase was primarily linked to fewer deaths from cancer and accidental drug overdoses. Life expectancy had experienced a decline between 2014 and 2017 due largely to increases in deadly overdoses and suicides. The leading causes of death in the U.S. remained the same from 2017 with heart disease, cancer, and unintentional injuries topping the list.

This interactive map displays the deaths per 100,000 residents by state in 2018. Click on the map to see how your state compares.
