Violent Protests
A controversial Indian guru, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, was convicted Friday morning of raping two women in his religious sect’s headquarters. Members of Singh’s sect, who purportedly number around 60 million in India and abroad, have initiated violent protests in response to the conviction. There are widespread reports of rioting, setting cars on fire, and even burning down train stations. The protests span the border between the Indian states of Punjab and Haryana. It is unknown how many deaths have occurred due to the rioting, but numbers are ranging from 11-17.This map shows the two towns where the protests are centered. Click on the map to learn more.

Arternative World

This creative imagining of India uses the unique stitching and sewing techniques common in each state. The colors, patterns, and materials used for each piece of the map reflect the culture of that piece’s state and the people who live there. In this case, it is fashion that is influencing the map and helping us visualize the wonderful diversity and similarity within India. Some states share patterns but not materials, while others share sewing techniques but not colors. Many utilize silk in their cultural dress and make it via cross-stitching. Click on the map below to learn about each individual state’s garb.
