Catastrophic Wildfires
Wildfires across California continue to blaze with vengeance. Officials confirm there will be no break anytime soon in the scorching weather and strong winds that continuously feed the fires. The Mendocino Complex Fire, one of 17 major wildfires burning across California, spans nearly 300,000 acres – and still expanding – is one of the largest in state history. The fires have destroyed hundreds of homes and forced thousands of people to flee. On Sunday, President Trump declared a “major disaster” in the state, ordering federal funding to be made available to help recovery efforts. Other countries, including Australia and New Zealand, have sent fire crews to help battle the wildfires. The fires have claimed 8 lives so far. This interactive map tracks the origins, perimeters, and hot spots of California’s wildfires. Click on the map to explore.

Children Abduction
A raid on Friday in Taos County, New Mexico, led to the discovery of 11 emaciated children hidden in a trailer in squalid conditions. A message forwarded to the Taos County Sheriff’s Office about an inquiry for food and water triggered the investigation. A two-month search for a missing 3-year-old boy led authorities to discover the group of children. However, the child that sparked the initial search was not found. Five adults were found at the scene, including two heavily armed men and three women. All five adults are charged with third-degree child abuse. This map depicts the location of the compound where the abducted children were found. Click on the map to learn more.

Friday’s Answer

Q: What mountain was famously deemed unclimbable in a range of table-topped mountains believed, until the late 1800’s, to be inhabited by prehistoric life?

A: Mount Roraima
Mount Roraima is the most famous of the Tepuis, or table top mountains, in Venezuela. It was unexplored until the late 1800s due of its sheer cliffsides and tabletop shape that left it isolated for millions of years. Because to its unique geography, 50% of the flora and fauna on top of the mountain are found nowhere else on Earth.
