Indonesia
Deadly Tsunami
A massive tsunami that swept through the Sunda Strait on Saturday has claimed the lives of at least 430 people as rescue efforts continue. The tsunami was triggered by a volcano and subsequent landslide below the surface of the water in between Sumatra and Java islands. The tsunami warning was issued on the 14-year anniversary of a devastating 9.1 earthquake which resulted in the death of 227,000 people. The tsunami struck “without warning” because Indonesia did not have functioning detection systems.

Italy
4.8-Magnitude Earthquake In Sicily
Two days after Mount Etna, Europe’s highest and most active volcano erupted, a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck in its periphery early today. The earthquake, whose epicenter was a little north of Catania, on Sicily’s eastern coast, damaged buildings and injured around 30 people, causing some of them to flee their homes to sleep in their cars. Officials said the earthquake was felt strongly because the epicenter was relatively shallow at 1 km deep.

Ukraine
Martial Law Lifted
Martial law implemented by the Ukrainian government in certain parts of the country has now been lifted after 30 days. The measure was put in place after Russia attacked Ukrainian naval vessels and extended over 10 regions along the Black Sea and borders with Russia, Belarus, and Moldova. Under martial law, Russian men, aged 16-60, were banned from entering Ukraine.  Ukrainian President, Petro Poroshenko, confirmed that he did not plan to extend martial law unless Russia took more offensive actions in the Kerch Strait.
