Iran: Boosting Uranium Enrichment

Iran
Boosting Uranium Enrichment
Iran announced on Tuesday that it has begun preparations for a new centrifuge center at the Natanz nuclear site. After President Trump stated that the U.S. was withdrawing from the nuclear deal, Iran announced it will start to redevelop nuclear infrastructure in case the 2015 nuclear deal collapses. They say it is their first step to increasing their enrichment capacity. Fears are growing in Tehran that the U.S. will impose new sanctions, which could damage Iran’s oil economy. The Director of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, Ali Akbar Salehi, said Iran’s move to increase enrichment capacity does not violate the nuclear deal, but rather that it sets the pace for increasing the nuclear program. He also mentioned the new Natanz facility is for civilian purposes only.

Japan
Pacific Passage
Today, French marathon swimmer Ben Lecomte set off from Choshi, Japan on a 5,500 mile journey across the Pacific Ocean. Should he succeed, Lecomte, 51, will be the first person to swim across the Pacific Ocean. Lecomte hopes to raise awareness of the ocean pollution problem by swimming through the Pacific Garbage Patch. The odyssey will take him 6 months, swimming for eight hours a day and resting, eating, and sleeping on the research yacht, Discoverer, which will accompany him for the duration of the swim. Researchers from 12 scientific institutions, including NASA and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, will conduct studies and take samples throughout the crossing.
