Hamas Leader Killed in Strike
Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed this morning in the Iranian capital of Tehran. This is the third event within the last week that is escalating the conflict in the broader Middle East, following a strike by Hezbollah on a sports field that killed 12 children this past Saturday and yesterday’s response by Israel with a strike in Beirut on the Hezbollah commander responsible for the prior attack. Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration of new Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Iranian media says he and his bodyguard were both killed around 2:00am local time by an “airborne guided projectile.” Israel has been carrying out a military campaign in Gaza in an attempt to destroy Hamas, the Palestinian faction mainly responsible for an attack on Israel on October 7 of last year. This conflict has brought unrest to the broader Middle East, with supporters of Hamas including Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Iranian government, and the Houthi rebels of Yemen, promising retribution on Israel.
This map depicts the three recent attacks within the past few days threatening further escalation of Israel’s conflict with its Middle East neighbors, including this morning’s strike on Tehran, Iran, that killed a senior leader of Hamas. Click on the map to learn more.

Stabbing Attack in Southport
An attacker with a knife killed three children at a Taylor Swift-themed dancing lesson in Southport, England on Monday. Two adults who are thought to have attempted to shield the young victims are in severe condition in the hospital. The attack resulted in eight other children suffering stab wounds, of whom five required hospitalization. A 17-year-old Banks teenager has been taken into custody as a suspect in the crime. A day after the stabbing attack, demonstrators and British police engaged in a violent altercation near a mosque in the English town of Southport in the northwest. The police believe the crowd rushed to the streets due to unsubstantiated allegations speculating on the identity of the teenage suspect, who was taken into custody on charges of murder and attempted murder.

AMOC Under a Closer Lens
In a recent study published in the journal Physical Review Letters, scientists have used a climate model to get a better view of the future of the Atlantic Meridional Ocean Current (AMOC), which runs from the Gulf of Mexico to the coast of Norway. Using this new high-resolution Community Earth System Model, the study found the AMOC may strengthen in the subarctic Atlantic due to warming, defying the widespread belief that this vital current system is uniformly weakening. The key to this is in feedback between the overall AMOC and regional-level AMOC. Both the high- and low-resolution models showed an overall slowdown in the AMOC. However, on a smaller, more regional scale, parts of the AMOC collapsed abruptly, while other parts actually strengthened over time. These findings highlight the need to incorporate regional dynamics into AMOC forecasts, as well as the importance of advancing high-resolution climate models to anticipate and respond to dramatic changes in our planet’s systems.
This map depicts AMOC’s current speeds in (left) a low-resolution climate model and (right) this paper’s high-resolution model. Click on the map to learn more.

Q: What country is 70% covered by the Karakum (Black Sand) Desert?
A: Turkmenistan
The Karakum Desert is a desert located in Central Asia. The word “Karakum” translates to “Black Sand” in Turkic languages, and the name refers to the dark shale-rich soil found below the sandy surface of the desert. The desert covers about 70% or 135,000 square miles (350,000 square km) of Turkmenistan. The desert is divided into three regions, the elevated northern Trans-Unguz Karakum, the low-lying Central Karakum, and the southeastern Karakum, home to a chain of salt marshes. Some 30 million years ago the entire Karakum region was covered by the sea. Orogenic (mountain-building) processes in the southern part of the Turan Plain resulted in a gradual diminishing of the sea and, ultimately, in its disappearance.
