Poland
Far-Right Protests
Tens of thousands of nationalists marched in a demonstration organized by far-right groups in Warsaw, Poland this past Saturday as Poles celebrated Independence day. Police estimate 60,000 people took part in Saturday’s march. Experts say this was one of the biggest gathering of far-right activists in Europe in recent years. Demonstrators chanted “Pure Poland, white Poland!” This march is an annual event to mark Poland’s independence in 1918 but according to Nick Lowles from a UK anti-extremism group, it has become an important rallying point for international far-right groups. This map shows the location of Warsaw, Poland. North Korea
Border Crossing
A North Korean soldier was shot by other North Korean soldiers as he attempted to defect across the demilitarized zone (DMZ).  He is currently being treated for his wounds and is in South Korean military custody. On the same day, an American man attempted to cross the border North from South Korea. Prior to this defection, there had been four other instances of North Koreans defecting across the DMZ since 2012.  This defection comes at a tense time as North Korea has accused South Korea of inciting their citizens to head south across the border. This map depicts the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that splits the Korean Peninsula roughly in half.
