Iraq
Kurdish Vote

On Monday, an overwhelming majority of Iranian Kurds voted “yes” to a referendum on independence. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accuses the head of the Kurdistan Regional Government of an act of treachery, for pressing ahead with the vote despite strong opposition from neighboring countries. Kurds are the fourth-largest ethnic group in the Middle East with an estimated population of 35 million living in Iraqi, Syrian, Iranian and Turkish territories. The ethnic group has never had a permanent nation state. This map shows the Iraqi territory controlled by Kurdish forces in purple. Click on the map to learn more about the story.

Israel
Three Killed in Attack
A Palestinian man shot two Israeli security guards and a policeman dead at the entrance of a luxury villa where he worked. When he opened fire, the shooter was crossing a security checkpoint from his village of Beit Surik to Har Adar. The 37-year old Palestinian man was well known in the community and worked cleaning homes. Israel has suffered from a string of similar attacks over the past couple years in what has been known as the “knife infatada,” but has also included shootings and car-rammings.
