Iraq
Mass Protests
Security Forces in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, have fired shots at anti-government protesters, killing 18. Thousands have been taking to the streets to display their anger at the lack of jobs, poor state services, infrastructure, power outages, and corruption. The rounds of fire were due to protesters disobeying a curfew imposed by the government. Major roads and bridges have been blocked, and access to the internet has been limited. Protesters reached Tahrir square in Baghdad, on Thursday morning before being dispersed by police firing tear gas and live ammunition. Seven protesters and a policeman died in Nasiriya, in Dhi Qar province, and a well known activist and his wife have also been murdered in the southern city of Basara, the masked gunman has not yet been identified.

France
Paris Stabbing
Four are dead after a stabbing attack in the Paris Police headquarters next to Notre Dame on Thursday afternoon. The assailant, an administrative officer of 20 years for the police department, was shot dead on the scene. Presently, no motive for the attack has been released, however, a workplace dispute is suspected to have offset the violence. Officers surrounded the scene, closing a nearby metro station and barring all entrance to the Île-de-la-Cité in the center of Paris. The city’s Mayor, Anne Hidalgo, and President Emmanual Macron have both come to the site to express support and solidarity after the country’s deadliest police attack in years.

United States
Whisky Hikes
The U.S. recently announced a tariff hike on a number of European goods after it was given the green light by the World Trade Organization.  The increase, 25%, will apply to a number of European goods including Scotch whisky. Prior to the announcement, there were no tariffs on Scotch whisky, leaving many distillers surprised and worried. The  Scottish Whisky Association is concerned these tariffs will hurt jobs and manufacturing of the product. Over 11,000 workers are employed by distilleries; of those, 7,000 are located in rural areas. The tariffs are a response to a row between the U.S. and the European Union (EU), the former arguing that the EU is illegally subsidizing Airbus, an airplane manufacturer, a direct detriment to U.S.-based Boeing. The U.S. is the Scotch whisky industry’s largest market with over $1.23 billion exported last year.
