Iraq
Protests and Internet Blackout
On Wednesday, violent clashes between protesters and security forces continued in Baghdad and cities across southern Iraq. Demonstrations, fueled by corruption and high unemployment, began in October, but have recently expanded to target Iran’s influence in the Iraqi government. On Monday, Iraq’s government responded by implementing an internet blackout that cut the country’s internet connectivity to 19% of its normal levels. In Baghdad, security forces have also opened fire on protesters attempting to cross the Jumhuriyah Bridge, which connects Tahrir Square to Bagdad’s “Green Zone”, where many embassies and government offices are located. Such altercations have killed more than 270 protesters since October 1st.

Jordan
Locals and Tourists Stabbed
Eight people were stabbed by a lone attacker in Jordan on Wednesday. The incident occurred in the city of Jerash, a popular travel destination for its Roman ruins. Four tourists and four locals were stabbed as a result of the attack. Among the tourists include three Mexican nationals and one Swiss national. Their tour guide, a local, was stabbed as well. Attacks on tourists are generally rare in the country of Jordan, which is regarded as a safe tourist destination in the Middle East. As a result, the country’s economy relies heavily on tourism. At the moment, no group has come forward to claim responsibility for the attack.

Voyager 2 Sends Message From Interstellar Space
NASA’s Voyager 2 is the second spacecraft in history to have reached interstellar space, described as the area between the stars. The messages reveal findings of the “cosmic shoreline”, which can be described as where the environment that was created by the sun ends, and interstellar space begins. Ed Stone, the project scientist for Voyager, says the Voyager probes are showing us how the sun interacts with the stuff that fills most of the space between stars in the milky way galaxy. Voyager 2 was launched in 1977, shortly after Voyager 1, although they both have left the sun’s bubble, they remain in our solar system.
