Rocket Attack On Military Base
According to Iraqi security sources, on Thursday night a rocket hit an Iraqi base in the remote province of Kirkuk where American troops are stationed. Reports indicated the Katyusha rocket struck the K1 base at around 8:45 pm local time. There were no immediate reports of casualties and with officials claiming the attack to be the work of Kataeb Hezbollah, a hardline Iraqi military faction close to Iran. This attack was the latest in a string of nearly 20 rocket attacks since late October on US troops stationed across the country and the first attack on the K1 base since December 27, which killed a US contractor there.

Dams Against Climate Change
A Dutch scientist from the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research has proposed a 300-mile dam between Scotland and Norway, and another 100-mile dam between France and England, as a solution to protect European populations from rising sea levels. A successful construction of the dams would protect The Netherlands -already 1/3 below sea level- from rising sea levels. Additionally, an estimated 25 million people from Norway, north France, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Netherlands and Germany would gain protection from the dams. The two dams, at a combined cost of €750 billion, would effectively create one large lake, blocking the Baltic sea from the rest of the world oceans, spurring questions about the true economic costs for shipping and fishing industries.

Mont Blanc Tourism Limit
French President Emmanuel Macron announced a plan yesterday to limit tourism to France’s popular Mont Blanc tourist area in an effort to combat negative environmental effects. The announcement came after Macron visited Mont Blanc’s Mer de Glace glacier, the largest glacier in France, which has receded nearly 2,300 feet in the last 30 years because of increased temperatures. The plan is part of France’s effort to focus on biodiversity protection in the face of climate change during the year 2020. Heavy traffic from tourism on the mountain has led to increased levels of pollution on the glacier.

Q: Over which body of water, does the weather phenomenon known as the Beacon of Maracaibo occur??
A: Lake Maracaibo
Due to its unique topography and wind patterns, thunderclouds form constantly above Lake Maracaibo and create intense lightning. The lake, covering an area of about 5,130 square miles (13,280 square km), receives an average of 28 lightning strikes per minute for up to 10 hours at a time. The lightning is so consistent (approx. 300 days a year at the same time and in the same area, where the Catatumbo River meets Lake Maracaibo) it has earned its own proper name, Catatumbo Lightning.
