Israel: IDF Strike Kills Aid Workers

Israel
Errant Strike Kills Aid Workers
World leaders are demanding answers after an Israeli air strike in Gaza killed seven aid workers from World Central Kitchen (WCK). Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has acknowledged an “unintentional” strike killing “innocent people.” The seven aid workers killed included one Palestinian and citizens of Australia, Canada, Poland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. WCK has been one of the most prominent providers of aid to Gaza residents since the start of Israel’s military operation to destroy the terrorist organization Hamas. WCK and another partner organization, American Near East Refugee Aid, have announced suspension of operations in Gaza as a result of the attack. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are promising an independent investigation and action to ensure similar incidents do not occur in the future.

Finland
School Shooting Kills 1, Injures 2
A 12-year-old student has died, and two others have been seriously injured, in a school shooting in a Helsinki suburb this Tuesday. The suspect, a fellow 12-year-old student, was taken into custody by authorities after fleeing the scene. While the motive remains unclear, the suspect admitted to carrying out the attack in a preliminary interview with authorities. The shooting took place at the Jokiranta campus of the Viertela School, a large institution with more than 800 students aged 7 to 16. This is the third major school shooting to occur in Finland in recent decades, with attacks in 2007 and 2008 claiming the lives of nearly 20 people. Following those attacks, the country tightened gun laws, raising the minimum age for gun ownership from 18 to 20 and implementing a new aptitude test. Hunting and gun ownership are traditions in the sparsely populated Nordic country. In a nation of only 5.6 million people, there are more than 1.5 million licensed firearms and 430,000 license holders.

Space
Best Route to Exit Solar System
Scientists from the University of Michigan have published a study in the journal Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences showing the best spacecraft trajectories for exploring the heliosphere. The heliosphere refers to the area around the Sun where high-energy particles dominate. Currently, the scientific community cannot reach a consensus on the boundaries or contours of the heliosphere, and they’re exploring mission concepts for an interstellar probe to travel beyond the Sun’s sphere of influence to answer these questions. According to the study, the best possible exit route is through the side of the heliosphere’s tail end. So far, only two spacecraft, NASA’s Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 probes, have crossed the heliosphere boundary, and their research has not yet given a definitive answer as to what it looks like. A future interstellar mission aims to travel beyond the heliosphere to collect samples from the local interstellar medium, the material between the stars in the Milky Way Galaxy.

Yesterday’s Answer

Q: What country has the highest volume of renewable freshwater resources?

A: Brazil
Out of all the water on Earth, only 2.5–2.75% is fresh water. Renewable freshwater resource flows refer to inflowing river basins and recharging groundwater aquifers. Brazil has the highest volume of renewable freshwater resources, totaling approximately 1,975 cubic miles (8,233 cubic kilometers). The freshwater in Brazil accounts for approximately 12% of the world’s freshwater resources. The Amazon River basin, which covers 48% of the country’s territory, alone accounts for 75% of Brazil’s freshwater resources but has only 4% of its population. Despite having the highest water availability in the world, there are still deep inequalities in access to water and sanitation among Brazil’s geographical regions, rural and urban communities and households.
