Over 100 Dead in Aid Debacle
At least 100 residents of Gaza are dead and several hundred more injured following a fraught encounter between Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Palestinians awaiting the drop off of humanitarian aid. The convoy of 38 trucks carrying food and supplies from Egypt was accompanied by the IDF for distribution in Gaza City. With tensions high due to Israel’s ongoing military operation in Gaza, the accounts of the encounter contrast to cast blame on one side or the other. The IDF says troops accompanying the convoy were forced to fire to prevent looting as the crowd swarmed the trucks, and the majority of deaths and injuries came from the stampede. Hamas officials have characterized the incident as a deliberate attack on civilians. The tragedy highlights the ongoing challenges of ensuring civilian safety and welfare in the Gaza Strip in the midst of a conflict to end the threat from terrorists.

Bangladesh
Building Fire Kills At Least 46
A large fire broke out in a six-story shopping mall in the Bangladesh capital of Dhaka, killing at least 46 people and injuring dozens of others. The fire started late Thursday in a restaurant on the first floor of the Green Cottage Shopping Mall, and quickly spread to other floors. More than a dozen firefighting units were deployed, using cranes to rescue people from the charred building. 22 people have been admitted to hospitals with severe burns and are in critical condition. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but the fire department said the building owner was served at least three times with notice to correct the building’s fire extinguishing system. Fires are common in the densely populated Dhaka, which has experienced a surge in new buildings, often constructed without proper safety measures.

Mexico
Popocatépetl Erupts
The stratovolcano known as Popocatépetl in the volcanic chain known as the Trans-Mexican Belt in central Mexico has erupted, spewing thick columns of volcanic ash. Popocatépetl has erupted 13 times between Tuesday and Wednesday, and 148 times by Thursday. At least 22 flights have been cancelled at the airport in Mexico City, situated 50 miles (80 km) from the stratovolcano. Grounding flights during volcanic events prevents aircrafts from suffering serious damage, such as abrasion to their engines caused by volcanic ash that can lead to a loss of power. Alerts issued by the National Disaster Prevention Center (CENAPRED) state emissions of debris and volcanic ash present safety risks, particularly to people trying to climb the volcano.

Q: What system of interconnected freshwater bodies has the largest surface area on Earth?
A: Great Lakes
The Great Lakes are a chain of deep freshwater lakes in east-central North America comprising Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario. The combined area of the Great Lakes of 94,250 square miles (244,106 square km) represents the largest surface of fresh water in the world. Except for Lake Michigan, the lakes provide a natural border between Canada and the United States, a frontier that was stabilized by a boundary-waters treaty in 1909. Lake Superior, bordered by Ontario, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, is the northernmost and westernmost lake and can be considered the headwater of the system. It is the deepest lake, with a mean depth of 483 feet (147 m).
