Israel
Protests and Prayer
Muslim leaders have called to end the boycott on the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem after Israeli officials fully removed all security measures to the area. Palestinian officials are now encouraging Muslims to return to the mosque, which had been under tight security after a nearby shooting two weeks ago. This announcement comes at the end of two weeks of Palestinians praying in the streets and clashing with Israeli police officers during protests, in which 6 Palestinians were killed.

Pakistan
Revenge Rape
The Pakistani police arrested 25 people in the city of Multan after a local village council ordered the public rape of a teenage girl. 20-year old, Mohammad Ashfaq, was ordered to rape the 16-year old girl after Ashfaq’s family accused the girl’s brother of sexually assaulting his sister. Vendetta rapes are still common in many areas of the Punjab province despite efforts by the government and human rights groups to put an end to the practice.

United States
Ohio State Fair Accident
One man was killed and several others were injured when the “Fire Ball” ride malfunctioned on the opening day of the Ohio State Fair. The ride is described as being an “aggressive thrill ride,” and consists of multiple rows of seats which spin around 40 feet in the air as the entire structure moves like a “pendulum.” Passengers on the Fire Ball were ejected 20 to 30 feet into the air at a high speed before falling to the ground as the ride broke apart while in motion. Ohio Governor, John Kasich has ordered a full investigation into the incident and ordered all rides at the fair to shut down.

GeoQuestion

Yesterday’s Answer

Q: Where in the world is the highest, permanently inhabited town in the world?

A: Peru

High in the Peruvian Andes lies the mining town of La Rinconada. At an almost unlivable altitude of 16,732 feet above sea level, the only reason for the town’s existence is the location of a nearby gold mine.
