Italy
Bridge Collapse
A bridge on a major highway outside of Genoa, Italy has collapsed after intense storms, leaving at least 22 dead and many more injured. A 650-foot section of the bridge collapsed and fell approximately 300 feet into an industrial area below. Officials believe there are still vehicles stuck under the rubble and are working with over 200 firefighters to rescue any survivors. The Morandi Bridge, which was built in the 1960’s, is part of the A10 highway that links Italy to France. There was heavier-than-usual traffic on the bridge due to an upcoming Italian holiday, Ferragosto. This map depicts the location of the collapsed bridge outside of Genoa. Click on the map to learn more.

Turkey
Currency Crisis
The value of Turkey’s currency, the lira, has dropped significantly over the past week, hitting record lows against the U.S. dollar. The lira fell 12 percent on Monday, then recovered to a loss of 8.5 percent today. Some economists say President Erdogan’s increasing control over the economy and tariffs and sanctions imposed by the U.S. have caused the lira’s value to fall. Countries with investments in Turkey have also seen their currencies devalue, raising concerns over a potentially larger banking crisis. On Tuesday, President Erdogan stated Turkey would retaliate against the tariffs by boycotting electronic products from the U.S.. President Erdogan says Turkey is the target of an economic war and has repeatedly called for Turkish citizens to sell their dollars and euros to support national currency. This map depicts the countries affected by the Turkish currency crisis. Click on the map to learn more.
