Budget Plan Creates EU Tension
The government of Italy submitted their country’s budget plans before the European Council in Brussels. For the coming year, the outline proposes a further increase in the deficit, thereby neglecting the European Union’s desire to significantly reduce debt in the coming years. According to the EU Budget Commissioner, there is a probability the budget plan will be rejected, which would mean Italy has to adjust the plan. As a result, Italian government bond yields rose significantly indicating they are now perceived as risky investments. Part of this risk is the high share of “Non-Performing Loans” (NPLs), which makes it harder for banks to lend money. This map depicts the percentage of NPLs and advances as a percentage of the total loans and advances per European country. Click on the map to learn more.

Pando Forest Decline
The world’s largest organism, Pando, is in danger of dying out partly due to the failure of humans to keep it adequately preserved. Located in Utah’s Fishlake National Park, the organism is thought to be about 80,000 years old and is composed of a cluster of 40,000 genetically identical trees that stretch over 107 acres. One of the threats is that hungry deer often break into the fenced off area and compromise the health of the trees. Additional pressures from drought and lack of tree growth and recovery have also contributed to the thinning of Pando. This map depicts the location of Pando in Fishlake National Park.
