Warming up to China
Italy has agreed to become the first Group of Seven nation to join China’s Belt and Road Initiative despite objections from the United States and other EU nations.  EU governments declined to sign into the trade project due to lack of financial standards and transparency.  Italy’s agreement to join will open up at least four of their ports to Chinese trade and investment with Trieste and Genoa serving as terminals of China’s Belt and Road. The two nations will sign the agreements on March 22.

World
Expensive Cities
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) released its annual Worldwide Cost of Living report, which highlights the top 10 most expensive cities around the globe. The survey compared the cost of 160 products and services, such as food, drink, transport, utility bills, and rent, in 133 cities worldwide. Singapore has held on to its No. 1 ranking since 2014. Asia and Europe dominated the top of the ranking with New York and Los Angeles being the only two U.S. cities to make the top ten. The report also listed the 10 least expensive cities with countries like Argentina, Brazil, Turkey and Venezuela all seeing a sharp fall in their cost of living ranking.

United States
Poppy Blooms
Thanks to a particularly wet winter, southern California hillsides are experiencing poppy “superblooms.”  While the mounds of poppy appear beautiful from afar, residents of the superbloom areas are overwhelmed by the amount of tourists rushing in for photos.  The city of Lake Elsinore was visited by 150,000 people in one weekend, prompting city officials to close the roads leading to poppy fields.  Rains will continue in southern California this month, creating a perfect growing environment for more poppy blooms.
