Japan
Fighter Jet Crash
A Japanese F-35A fighter jet went missing off the coast of Japan yesterday approximately 30 minutes after taking off from Misawa Airbase. As of today, the tail end of the aircraft has been found but the pilot is still missing. It is unclear if the pilot ejected before the plane crashed. The U.S. is assisting Japan’s search effort. Japan recently purchased a fleet of F-35s from the United States but has grounded them all since the crash.

India
900 Million Eligible Voters
India’s general-election campaign kicks off tomorrow, April 11 with the world’s largest exercise in democracy: more than 900 million eligible voters, 1 million polling stations and seven phases spread across six weeks that will culminate on May 23. Voters will choose representatives for the Indian parliament, which will, in turn, decide whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is selected for a second term or if the opposition, Congress Party, will rule. With an overall population of 1.34 billion people, Indian election officials are trying to combat the spread of fake news. Despite efforts by India’s Election Commission to work with social media giants in tackling the spread of misinformation, at least one former top election official is warning that fake news could end up being the deciding factor in some constituencies with extremely tight races.
This interactive map depicts India’s election timeline by constituencies. Click on the map to learn more.

Historic Ice Core Drill
A team of European scientists announced they will be leading an expedition to Antarctica to collect the oldest ice core- 1.5 million years. The scientists announced at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) conference in Vienna that they are in search of this ice core to better understand climate from 1.5 million years ago. The drilling will begin in 2021 and continue through three Antarctic summers. Preliminary results will reveal what Earth’s prehistoric climate was like and will be ready in 2025.
This map depicts the location where the team of scientists will begin drilling, Dome C. Click on the map to learn more.
