Attack in Jalalabad
The first major attack on an Afghan media organization since 2001 occurred on Wednesday in the city of Jalalabad. Four suicide bombers besieged a state TV station and the ensuing three-hour battle with security forces left six dead and four injured. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack. Jalalabad is the capital of the eastern Nangarhar Province, which was mostly controlled by ISIL’s Wilayat Khorasan. Afghan security forces, with support from American security advisers and air power, have been trying to reduce the insurgent’s numbers and hold on territory in the region.
This map from the Institute for the Study of War shows conflicts between various factions in Afghanistan in 2015. Nangarhar is the area with the black dots and features clashes between Taliban and ISIL militants. Click on the map to expand.
