Powerful Earthquake
On Japan’s Hokkaido island, a 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck Thursday killing at least 7 people and knocking out power to 5.3 million residents. 33 people are missing and over 300 injured as landslides followed the quake. The nuclear facility in the area was shut down. Japan is still dealing with the aftermath of Typhoon Jebi, the most powerful typhoon to hit the nation in 25 years. Iraq
Violent Protests
Protestors took to the streets for a third day in a row, in the southern city of Basra, Iraq. 280 miles south of Baghdad, the public displayed frustration over high unemployment rates, poor government services, as well as electricity and water shortages, contaminated water, and problems with sanitation in the region that generates much of Iraq’s oil. One person died and 21 others were wounded yesterday after security forces used tear gas and live ammunition. Tuesday, at least five people were killed, and 68 civilians and security forces were injured in demonstrations. Violent protests come amidst Iraqi politicians’ struggle to form a functioning government following the parliamentary elections.
