Japan
School Children Knife Attack
A man armed with knives attacked a group of schoolchildren boarding a school bus in Kawasaki, killing at least two and injuring more than a dozen. The suspect later stabbed himself and died in the hospital. Most of the victims were students at Caritas Elementary School and suffered non-life threatening injuries. The motive for the attack is unknown. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe described the attack as “extremely harrowing,” adding that he is outraged and promising to tighten security for children commuting to and from school.

Europe
EU Election Results
Over the course of a 4-day election, citizens from 28 EU nations voted for representatives of the EU Parliament. One of the biggest takeaways from the election was the centrist parties’ overall loss: together, the European People’s Party (EPP) and the Socialist and Democrats (S&D) lost over 70 seats, reducing their representation to a 43% majority. Additionally,  the far-right parties and center-left parties both gained representatives, indicating future decision-making might be complicated for the EU. The Green Party also gained seats, now ranking as the fourth-largest voting bloc in the EU.

Malaysia
Take Your Plastics Back
On Tuesday, Malaysian officials announced they will send back some 3,300 tons of non-recyclable plastic waste to their origin countries after 60 containers of trash had been illegally imported. Malaysia became the world’s main destination for plastic waste after China banned its import last year in an initiative to clean up its environment. Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte ordered his government to hire a private shipping company to send 69 containers of garbage back to Canada.
