Kenya: Devastating Floods

Kenya
Devastating Floods
Weeks of heavy rain have left Kenya and other east African countries with extreme flooded conditions. In Kenya, over 260,000 people have been displaced, and at least 100 people have died. Over 8,000 hectares of farm land, an area larger than New York City, have been destroyed by the floods. The eastern region of Africa suffered extreme drought conditions last year and many were still recovering from a low-yield farming season when the heavy rains began. The United Nations has raised concern over the propensity for disease outbreak due to poor sanitation and water infrastructure – 55 cases of cholera have been reported, so far. This map depicts flooded counties in Kenya. Click on the map to learn more.

United States
Walmart Crackdown
In an effort to combat the opioid epidemic in the United States, Walmart announced Monday that it will limit the supply of acute opioid prescriptions to no more than 7 days and no more than 50 mg of morphine. Walmart’s new policy will go into effect within 60 days as the company intends to align itself with the prescription guidelines recently set forth by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Some herald this move as an important step to fighting the opioid epidemic while others believe that prescriptions, in particular, those intended for pain management, should be overseen by physicians and patients. This map depicts the number of Walmarts in each state as well as the number of opioid deaths per 100,000 people. Click on the map to expand.
