Lebanon: Israel Strikes Tyre

Lebanon
Israel Strikes Tyre
The Israeli military carried out extensive strikes in southern Lebanon, hitting the ancient city of Tyre after issuing its broadest evacuation order there yet. On Wednesday morning, Israel began attacks on Hezbollah command and control centers in Tyre. Tyre, a 2,500-year-old provincial capital located about 50 miles south of Beirut, had largely been spared in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. The Israeli military gave evacuation warnings to civilians around specific buildings in the historic city, sending further evacuees to Beirut, which already holds tens of thousands displaced by the ongoing conflict. Israel’s military says it has killed three Hezbollah commanders and some 70 fighters in the south in the past 48 hours. A month of intense Israeli strikes on Lebanon have killed nearly the entire leadership of Hezbollah, dealing a succession of blows without precedent in the four decades of Israel’s battles against the group.

Huge Lithium Deposit Found
Lithium deposits recently discovered in Arkansas are estimated to contain between 5 million to 19 million tons of the valuable mineral. Lithium is used in batteries for cell phones, laptops, and electric vehicles, and the discovery could meet the year 2030’s predicted energy demand for car batteries nine times over. Samples were drawn from a geological region called the Smackover Formation, which extends from Texas to Florida. The Smackover is already commonly used by energy and mining companies to produce oil, gas and other natural resources. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) used samples from brine reservoirs – mineral rich deposits of water – in Arkansas and tested these in a lab. Then, they used a machine learning model to combine the lithium concentrations in the brines and create maps that predict the region’s total lithium concentrations. This discovery now represents a 35% to 136% increase in the current amount of lithium estimated to be in the U.S.

This map depicts the area in Arkansas where samples were drawn to confirm the presence of what could be a large-scale lithium deposit. Click on the map to learn more.

Renewables Surpass 30%
As of August 2024, renewables account for 30.1% of U.S. utility-scale generating capacity, with solar alone providing 99.6% of new capacity added that month. Solar and wind additions dominated the first eight months of 2024, contributing 78.3% and 10.7% of new capacity, respectively. Solar now accounts for 9.2% of installed capacity, surpassing nuclear (8.0%) and hydropower (7.7%), a sharp rise from under 1% in 2014. Renewables are projected to exceed 40% and overtake natural gas within three years. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) anticipates continued expansion, with 212 GW of new solar and 67 GW of wind expected by 2027. Solar has led new capacity additions every month since September 2023, reflecting its critical role in the U.S. energy transition.
