Libya
Bombing at Election Site
On Wednesday, 11 people were killed in a suicide bombing which occurred at the main electoral headquarters in Tripoli, Libya. Other militants stormed the building and set it on fire while multiple attackers detonated bombs. Voters present at the site were registering for elections, which are expected to take place at the end of the year. No group has currently claimed responsibility for the attack however it was clear to be aimed at dismantling joint Libya and UN  efforts to organize an election. While the city often experiences clashes between localized militant groups, the Islamic State has managed to hold on to sleeper cells in coastal areas on Libya’s coast. This map depicts the area the bombing occurred in Libya. Click on the map to expand.

Brazil
Building Collapse
Early Tuesday, a high-rise building in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s historic downtown caught fire and collapsed an hour and a half later. The building, which was home to “squatters” at the time of the fire, had previously functioned as the headquarters for the Federal Police. However, low-income families who belonged to the Front for Fighting for Housing, a social organization dedicated to fair housing, had occupied the building. The city registered 400 people living in the building and had been trying to negotiate the building’s vacancy with the residents since February. The fire is believed to have been caused by a gas explosion. One person is reported dead and the number of missing people has not been declared. This map depicts the location of the fire in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Click on the map to learn more.
