Dangerous Affairs
While gay relationships and activities are not specifically illegal in Indonesia, the northern province of Aceh has been allowed to practice Shariah Law and has imposed increasingly conservative rules on its citizens. Indonesia’s reputation as a moderate Islamic country is being further criticized when today two young men were publically caned for engaging in gay sex. The two men were found when a neighborhood watch group broke down the door to one of the men’s houses and found the two in their private residence. After two months in a detention center, the men were caned 83 times each in accordance with Indonesian interpretation of Shariah Law. Caning, stoning, and other forms of punishment, all of which are made illegal by international human rights standards, are practiced in most regions of the world where Shariah Law has been enacted.
The map above displays where in the world Shariah Law is implemented and to what degree. It is possible to see many exclaves of Shariah Law in otherwise moderate countries. Click on the map to expand.
