Suspicious Packages
On Wednesday, suspicious packages were sent to multiple embassies and consulates in Melbourne and Canberra. Officials did not report any possible motives and did not identify all the sites or the total number of affected sites. Over a dozen foreign officers received packages, some staff said they contained asbestos but officials confirm there was no harm to staff. Consulates that reported receiving packages include France, Greece, Italy, New Zealand, Pakistan, Switzerland, and the United States. The British consulate in Melbourne also confirmed receiving a package.

Mediterranean Sea
Awaiting Land
49 refugees have been stranded for a record 18 days in the Mediterranean Sea. 32 migrants are aboard the Sea-Watch 3, and 17 others are aboard the Sea Eye; both vessels belonging to humanitarian groups. The ships have been coasting off the shore of Malta waiting for disembarkation but both Italy and Malta have not allowed the ships to dock and let passengers off. Other countries, such as Germany, Romania, and Portugal expressed a willingness to take the refugees but only if Malta allows them to disembark on the island.

Europe
Deadly Winter Storm
Extreme weather conditions throughout Europe have left at least 13 people dead, with more inclement weather to come.  Power outages, floods, heavy winds, collapsed roofs, and avalanches are widespread throughout countries such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Off the coast of the Netherlands, strong winds caused 231 shipping containers to tumble off a cargo ship. Schools remain closed in certain cities as temperatures continue to drop and the storm moves over Eastern Europe toward the Caucasus region.

This map depicts snowfall from January 1st to January 8th over the European continent. Click on the map to learn more.
