Mexico
166 Bodies Found in Mass Grave
On Thursday, the remains of at least 166 people were found in a mass grave in the Mexican Gulf Coast state of Veracruz.  Investigators also found personal items such as clothing and ID cards; evidence indicates the bodies have been there for a couple of years. On August 8, investigators discovered the bodies in 32 burial pits after receiving an anonymous tip. Drones and ground-penetrating radar were used to help locate the remains; the exact location of the grave has not been disclosed. There has been a string of violent crimes in Veracruz and the eastern region of Mexico in recent years – it is a major drug trafficking route for moving narcotics toward the U.S. border. This map depicts the state of Veracruz, where the mass grave was found. China
British Ships in South China Sea
China’s Foreign Ministry has described Great Britain’s presence in disputed territories in the South China Sea as a “provocation” after a Royal Navy warship sailed near the disputed territory of the Paracel Islands, south-east of Hong Kong. The area is coveted for its potential oil and natural gas resources and has been under dispute by neighboring countries for years. The recent confrontation between the U.K. warship and China may threaten Britain’s hopes for a free-trade deal with China after their EU leave.  This map depicts China’s claim line (red) in the South China Sea as well as disputed territories within it. Click on the map to learn more.

Yesterday’s Answer

Q: What midwestern city was “raised” 4 to 10 feet above sea level in the 19th century?

A: Chicago, Illinois
In the mid-1800’s, Chicago sat on the same sea level as the Michigan River.  Due to flooding and poor drainage, the City Council decided to elevate the city in a piece-meal fashion by 4 to 10 feet throughout the city.
