Fireworks Warehouse Explosion
At least 24 people were killed and 49 more injured in a series of explosions at several fireworks factories in Tultepec, Mexico. Among those dead are at least four firefighters and two police officers who rushed to put out the initial blaze, which began at 9:40 a.m. with the first explosion. Twenty minutes later, three more explosions occurred, killing some residents and first-responders who arrived to help. The region – located 25 miles outside of Mexico city – is known for its pyrotechnics industry and has seen several major explosions in recent years. Citizens of the region and the country are outraged, citing lack of regulations and government oversight as responsible for the deadly blasts. China
Race Against Tariffs
As trade tensions between the United States and China escalate, the world watched one U.S. cargo vessel race to China to beat the imposition of new tariffs. The vessel, named Peak Pegasus, was carrying U.S. soybeans, a heavily traded commodity between the United States and China; last year China imported $14 billion of soybeans from the United States. The vessel did not arrive in time and was subjected to newly imposed, 25% tariffs. China has threatened to retaliate with more tariffs and is already looking to their second closest soybean trading partner, Brazil, to continue importing the product. This map depicts the route of Peak Pegasus traveling towards China in the Yellow Sea. Tourist Boat Capsized
A tourist boat, the Phoenix PC Diving ship, capsized in 16-foot waves caused by a violent storm off the coast of the resort island of Phuket. The vessel was carrying 105 passengers. A confirmed death toll of 60 and a total of 29 missing passengers were reported as of Friday morning. Police said the boat, which sank about 7 km from shore, was properly registered and had not been overloaded. Thailand’s rainy season, which typically runs from May to October, often causes high winds and flash storms in coastal areas. The Tourist Police had previously warned Phuket businesses to refrain from taking boats out on the water due to serious weather conditions.
