Hundreds Feared Dead
In the wake of Cyclone Idai, Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi said the country’s potential death toll could reach over 1,000. The powerful storm made landfall Thursday near the coastal city of Beira, Mozambique’s fourth-largest city. According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) 90% of the port city was destroyed. Cyclone Idai tore through Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe killing at least 200 and leaving tens of thousands displaced. According to the U.N., the full extent of the devastation is unclear but includes damage to crops, water supply destruction and increased risk of gender-based violence.

World
88 Pounds of Plastic
A beached Cuvier’s beaked whale found in Mabin, Philippines on Saturday died with over 88 pounds of plastic trash inside its body. With millions of tons of plastic ending up in the world’s oceans every year, it’s common for marine wildlife to ingest it. In a 2015 report by Ocean Conservancy and the McKinsey Center for Business and Environment, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand accounted for about 60% of the plastic waste that ends up in oceans. The whale’s death brought renewed focus to the worldwide problem and according to the World Economic Forum, “plastic could outweigh fish in the oceans by 2050 with its current trajectory”.

Mali
Gunmen Storm Army Camp
A weekend attack on a Malian military base left 23 soldiers confirmed dead. The attack, which took place in Dioura, of Mali’s Mopti region, is reported to have been orchestrated by a militant group under the command of Ba Ag Moussa, a deserter army colonel. Mali was considered one of the more stable and democratic countries in Africa until 2012 when jihadist groups paired with Taureg militant groups and stormed the capital, Bamako. Recently, Mali has been used as a “launch pad” for attacks in neighboring Niger and Burkina Faso.
