Myanmar
Hunger in City Slums
The Southeast Asian country of Myanmar is experiencing detrimental effects from the COVID-19 pandemic as cases have increased rapidly in the last number of weeks. The mortality rate of 1 per 100,000 is relatively low compared to the United States of 65 per 100,000. Just a month ago, the country’s total number of deaths from the virus was 7, it has now surpassed 1,000. This map by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs’ (OCHA) Humanitarian Situation Report on Myanmar shows the latest number of reported COVID-19 positive cases in the country. It has been reported that the huge rise in unemployment and lack of business has led to people hunting for food in the open drains by the slums in which they live. Rats, reptiles, and insects are often eaten by families in rural areas but people in urban areas are now being forced to supplement their nutrition however they can.

Pakistan
Islamic Seminary Bombing
On Tuesday, a powerful blast ripped through an Islamic seminary on the outskirts of the northwest Pakistani city of Peshawar, killing at least eight students and wounding more than 110. Authorities stated the blast occurred about 8:30 am local time in the main hall of the Jamia Zuberia religious school in Dir Colony, where about 500 students were gathered to hear a lecture. Police said those killed were young men, aged between 20 and 30, and among the injured were four boys under the age of 13. Eyewitnesses claimed the bomb went off minutes after someone left a bag at the school which contained up to 6 kg (13 lb) of explosives.  There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Peshawar located about 170 kilometers (around 100 miles) west of Islamabad, is the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, bordering Afghanistan. The province has been the scene of several militant attacks in recent years, but sectarian violence has also killed or wounded people at mosques or seminaries across Pakistan.

United States
Surge in Early Voting
More than 58.6 million Americans have already cast their votes in advance of election day in the United States, surpassing the total number of votes cast in the presidential election in 2016. States across the country have instituted mail-in and early voting policies in an attempt to avoid crowding at polling places on election day next Tuesday. According to early voting tallies tracked by the Associated Press, 51% of early votes were cast by registered Democrats, compared with 31% cast by registered Republicans as of last Sunday. An estimated 25% of early votes received have been cast by new or infrequent voters, signaling enthusiasm for voting. The early turn-out has led to long lines at polling places across the country. Experts are estimating approximately 150 million Americans will cast votes in the 2020 Presidential Election.

Yesterday’s Answer

Q: Which urban area was the first to reach a population of one million in the Common Era?

A: London
Although many historians claim Rome was the first city in the world to reach a population of one million in approximately 133 BCE, London is believed to be the first city to reach a population of one million since the start of the modern calendar, in 1851 CE. New York City followed closely behind, reaching a population of one million in 1875. Today, more than 300 urban areas around the world have populations over 300 million.
