New Zealand
Deadly Eruption
A volcano on the popular tourist island of White Island in New Zealand erupted on Monday afternoon leaving five dead and dozens missing. White Island, also called Whakaari, is located in the Bay of Plenty off the northeastern coast of North Island and is described as the most active volcano in New Zealand. Though the island is uninhabited, it is visited by thousands of tourists each year. The eruption on Monday occurred suddenly, trapping dozens of visitors on the island. Twenty-three people were evacuated from the island, including five people who had died. Others, seen exploring the volcano’s upper crater before the eruption remain missing. New Zealand authorities will return to search the island on Tuesday morning but have not seen signs of life since the initial evacuation.

India
New Delhi Factory Fire
On Sunday morning, at least 43 people were killed in a fire at a garment factory in New Delhi. The illegal factory was located in a building zoned for residential use in the dense Sadar Bazar section of the city’s old quarter. The area’s narrow alleyways and tangled network of electrical wires made it difficult for firefighters to reach the blaze. Eye witnesses reported that around 100 workers were asleep in the factory’s sleeping quarters when the fire broke out, leading many to die from smoke inhalation. Most of the victims are believed to be migrant workers from the impoverished state of Bihar in eastern India. Investigators believe an electrical short circuit caused the fire.

Ukraine
Peace Talks with Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Russian President Vladimir Putin are meeting in Paris today to discuss ending the violent conflict between the two states. The meeting will also  be attended by French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, comprising a group known as the Normandy Four. Ukrainian army forces and pro-Russia separatists have been  violently clashing since separatists declared two republics in Ukraine’s eastern region of Donbass in 2014. More than 13,000 civilians and combatants have died over the course of the conflict. The peace talks are the first time the leaders of these countries are meeting face-to-face since Zelensky took office in May. Thousands of demonstrators assembled in Ukraine’s capital Kiev on Sunday demanding a peace deal  without sacrificing Ukrainian sovereignty.

This map depicts areas of conflict between Ukraine and Russia on the border between the two states. Areas shaded in blue are currently held by Russian-backed separatists. Click on the map to learn more.
