Nigeria
Bandits Slaughter Villagers
On Saturday afternoon, a gang of what are believed to be former cattle thieves killed at least 45 people in the village of Gwaska, in the Birnin Gwari area of Nigeria’s northwestern state Kaduna. Victims included children as well as members of a self-defense force created in response to previous attacks by the bandits. Some of the bodies found were mutilated. The gunmen burned down houses and fired shots, causing residents to run in panic towards the gunmen. This attack is the latest in a series of killings, robberies, and arson in nearby rural areas; last week 13 people were killed by the bandits in Zamfara, where the attackers are allegedly from. This map depicts Kaduna and Zamfara areas in Nigeria. Click on the map to learn more.

Afghanistan
Mosque Bombing
On Sunday, a bomb set off in a mosque in the city of Khost, Afghanistan killed 17 people and injured over 37. Worshipers at the mosque were there for afternoon prayer when the bomb went off.  The mosque in eastern Afghanistan doubled as a voter registration site for the parliamentary elections set to take place in October; the first election held since 2014. In the past weeks, voter registration sites have been attacked by militant groups to deter voters from registering. The bomb was placed inside the mosque rather than set off by a suicide bomber, as some of most recent bombings in the region have been. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. This map depicts the site of the bombing in Khost, Afghanistan. Click on the map to expand.

United States
More Lava
Following the eruption of Mount Kilauea last week on the Big Island of Hawaii, over 1700 residents have evacuated their communities on the eastern part of the island.  Volcanic fissures continue to crack open – spewing molten rock, toxic gas and destroying surrounding structures. Since the eruption, 10 fissures have opened up in the Leilani Estates community and residents fear they will not be able to return home. The volcano was initially set off by a 5.0 magnitude earthquake on Thursday; on Friday, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake exacerbated seismic activity and lead to an increase in lava flows and gas release over the weekend. Officials warn that the volcanic activity shows “no sign of slowing down.” This interactive map depicts the fissures and roadblocks in Leilani Estates. Click on the map to expand.
