Collapsed School Building
A three-story building with a school on its top floor collapsed in Lagos, Nigeria yesterday morning, killing at least 9 people. Around 100 students were in the building, and 40 people have been pulled out alive from the rubble so far, most of them children. The building, which also contains offices, shops, and residential units, had been marked and listed for demolition as it had been cracking for a long time. Collapses are not unusual in Nigeria as regulations are not strictly enforced. Adesina Tiamiyu, head of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), was skeptical that the building met safety standards. Many schools are also frequently placed in areas that are not appropriate for educational institutions, so Tiamiyu doubted that the government would allow a school to be put into the building it was housed in.

Dire Warnings
On Wednesday, the UN released the sixth Global Environment Outlook at its conference in Nairobi, Kenya. The report compiled over a six-year period by 250 scientists from 70 nations, warns that damage to the planet is so dire, people’s health will be increasingly threatened unless urgent action is taken. The report estimated that poor environmental conditions “cause approximately 25 percent of global disease and mortality.” Based on data from 2015, they estimated 9 million deaths each year can be attributed to pollution alone. The report concludes “unsustainable human activities globally have degraded the Earth’s ecosystems, endangering the ecological foundations of society” and calls for nations to take responsibility for the harm they are causing and implement policies such as tackling food waste and plastic pollution in the oceans as soon as possible.
