Nigeria
Election Results In
On Wednesday, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) party, secured a second term as the leader of Africa’s most populous country. The 76-year-old president defeated his rival, Mr. Atiku Abubakar, 72, of Abubakar’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP), with 56% of the votes. Overall, the APC won with15.2 million votes while the PDP received 11.3 million. Delays and violence marred the run-up to Saturday’s poll and the national turnout was just 35.6%. The PDP rejected the result citing electoral fraud and demanded fresh elections in four of Nigeria’s 36 states.

Indonesia
Unauthorized Gold Mine Collapse
According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), at least 60 miners were buried in an unauthorized gold mine in the Bolaang Mongondow region of Sulawesi on Tuesday. Officials reported 3 are confirmed dead and at least 13 have been rescued as of early Wednesday. The effort to rescue those trapped at the remote site is hampered by steep terrain and unstable soil conditions after the collapse triggered a landslide. Informal mining operations are common in Indonesia, with thousands laboring in perilous conditions.

Russia
Nuclear Threat
The Russian state media released a list of potential sites that Russia would target in the event of a nuclear strike. According to Russian TV, the current hypersonic missiles being developed by Russia would be able to hit these targets within 5 minutes. Many pointed out that two sites listed by the Russian media agency are two defunct military facilities: Fort Ritchie, a Maryland training center that closed in 1998, and McClellan, a California Air Force that wasn’t been active since 2001. In the wake of the torn INF Treaty, Russia has remarked they would deploy missiles closer to U.S. territory should the U.S. begin to position new missiles in Europe.
