Nigeria
Flooding Rivers
The banks of the Niger and Benue rivers burst from extreme precipitation in the last weeks. There is flash flooding in the central and southern parts of Nigeria, affecting vulnerable rural areas the most. Reportedly, over 100 people have died. Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari, has promised to spend 3 billion Naira (approximately $8.2 million dollars) on urgent and medical aid to help the communities most in need. Predictions show that the flooding could worsen due to ongoing inflow of water into the two rivers, potentially aggravating the current situation. This map depicts the location of the Niger and Benue river banks in Nigeria. Click on the map to learn more.

Philippines, China
Super Typhoon Mangkhut
Super typhoon, Mangkhut, hit the northern Philippines on Saturday and moved across southern China through Sunday and into today. On Monday, the police in the Philippines gave an unofficial death toll of 66 people across the nation; emergency workers say more than 40 bodies were recovered after Mangkhut set off a landslide in a remote northern town Itogon, where rescuers listed 61 people believed to be missing and dead.  Late Sunday, Typhoon Mangkhut made landfall in Guangdong, China’s most populous province, killing 4 people. Reportedly, around 2.5 million people have been moved to safety in southern China. Hong Kong was hit hard with gusts of up to 223 kph (138 mph), leaving behind extensive damage. This animated and interactive map depicts the path and severity of the storm. Click on the live map to explore.

United States
Hurricane Florence Ongoing Destruction
Tornadoes and heavy rain caused by Hurricane Florence have killed at least 20 people after making landfall on Friday. Authorities and volunteers are conducting ongoing rescues over land and water in North and South Carolina. As more intense rainfall arrives in these states, there will likely be further flooding from overflowing rivers, as well as mudslides in the mountains – which could be “catastrophic” – endangering people’s safety and damaging properties. At least 700,000 households in the affected areas are experiencing power outages and many roads are inaccessible for traffic. Approximately one million people have been evacuated in the endangered areas and more people are expected to leave their homes in the coming hours. This map depicts the areas that are most prone to flooding due to overflowing rivers. Click on the map to learn more.

Friday’s Answer

Q: Which country generates the most clean-energy per person?

A: Iceland
Around 85% of Iceland’s total primary energy supply comes from domestically produced renewable energy sources. Iceland taps into its volcanic roots for development of geothermal renewable energy. This supplies nearly all of Iceland’s heat and hot water.
