Nigeria
Morning Prayer Bombing
On Tuesday, an estimated 50 Nigerians were killed when a 17-year-old suicide bomber denoted a bomb during morning prayers at a mosque. The attack took place in the town of Mudi in the Adamawa State. Several people were injured during the blast and were rushed to nearby hospitals. So far no group has claimed responsibility for the attack but many are assuming it is the jihadist group Boko Haram, which is known for their attacks in mosques, schools, markets, and churches.

Russia
Radioactive Particles
Russian officials are denying claims of a nuclear accident on its territory despite “extremely high” traces of a radioactive isotope being found in the Ural mountains. Despite the denial, Russian weather services have acknowledged that they have measured pollution levels of ruthenium-106 at 1,000 times over the normal level within the area. The acknowledgment appears to confirm a report by France’s nuclear safety institute which detected a cloud of radioactive pollution over Europe and reports are indicating that “the release of the isotope Ruthenium-106 posed no health or environmental risks to European countries.”

United States
Temporary Protection
The Trump Administration has just announced it will be ending the Temporary Protected Status designation for Haitians by July 2019. Temporary Protected Status is an immigration status allowed by law for certain countries experiencing disasters, war or epidemics. This decision comes right after the Department of Homeland Security determined that the “extraordinary conditions” justifying their presence in the United States following a 2010 earthquake “no longer exist.”

This map depicts the degree of damage incurred by the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, which led to almost 60,000 Haitians gaining Temporary Protected Status. Click on the map to learn more about the story.
