Vanishing Submarine
The Argentinian submarine that vanished November 15 is still being searched for by the Argentine Navy with dozens of other countries assisting. A sound consistent with an explosion was detected near the vessel’s last known location last week off the country’s South Atlantic coast. The Argentine Navy has stated that the last message sent by crew members reported a fire on board caused by water entering through a blow hole, resulting in a short circuit within the submarine. This map shows the missing submarine’s last known location. Click on the map to learn more.

Maps Do It Better
Refugee Crisis
This interactive map, by The Refugee Project, displays the amount of refugees leaving any given country. The refugee crisis has been in the news for the past couple of years as refugees leave their war-torn countries to seek asylum and better opportunities. While it may be simple to understand the concept of a refugee, it might be more difficult to visualize what “crisis” actually entails without a visualization. The interactive map sheds light on the scale in which refugees seek asylum and what countries they are coming from. The refugee crisis is not new to this decade; this map portrays refugee movement from 1975 to 2016 and has the option to toggle to and from outward migration to refugee intake by country. Additionally, every year is displayed with news sources to explain political events that sparked refugee movements.
